This is really bad news.
"Chinese officials revealed that pigs have tested positive for bird flu in Xiangtan County, Hunan Province, where a bird epidemic is raging and one human death, possibly from bird flu, has already occurred,....
....Ou Daiming, said that this was the first time pigs have been tested for the virus in Hunan Province. The results have already been reported to the Ministry of Health, and random pig testing is taking place in nearby villages. So far, officials say they have found no other inflected pigs."
Guess what livestock we use to incubate our influenze virus vaccine?
Pigs.
Fortunately, it appears that we may have dodged a bullet sine they slaughtered all the pigs, and subsequent testing has not revealed a positive result in surrounding areas. Still, this is a very bad harbinger. It means that there is a very real capability for this bug to mutate and infect mammals. It has now done it once, and it certainly could do it again. Next time, we may not be able to catch it before it escapes. Once the leap has been made to pigs, and it spreads, then I think it will become a virtual certainty to jump into humans.
