Domestic-6 and I are in a pretty pessimistic mood these days. We have, for quite some time now, been watching Russia as it slowly backslides into a new tyranny under Putin. We have seen his opponents murder , and his critics silenced . He has made a policy of seizing the countries oil and energy assets, even though it requires imprisoning his nations leading entreprenuers. Now, finally, we see naked aggression in the form of tanks rolling into Georgia. It appears quite apparent to me that this move is to gain further leverage against Europe by increasing control of the oil supply to the continent. Furthermore, there has been, not unlike Hitler's Germany, a militarization of the population. That is to say that the Russians are more militaristic than in recent previous years. Along with this, there has been a lot of declarations for Russia by the citizens of Germany and the like. The reason for this is simply that they do not like America, and since Georgia has been pro-America, they will tend to lobby for the side that is against us and our allies. Do not kid yourselves; anti-Americanism runs broad, and, sometimes, very deep. So deep, that one of Domestic-6's classmates lives in poverty in Uzbekistan than to escape to America. Do not kid yourselves to think that it is not there. Do not kid yourselves to think that it is because we deserve it. Do not kid yourselves; going through the UN to make war has not alleviated this. We alienate half our detractors by daring to look out for interests, and we energize the other half by doing so in an equivocal manner.
Putin is not our friend or ally. Putin runs Russia. Therefore, Russia is not our friend, nor is it our ally. It's allies include North Korea, Iran, China, Venezuela, Cuba, and just about any other piece of shit authoritarian regime on the planet. They have, whole, and in part, colluded to interfere, frustrate, and obstruct every positive action that the United States has taken on behalf of ourselves.
Of course, we see the duplicity and lie that is the anti-war movement in America. They screach and wail whenever an an american laser guided bomb kills a religious zealot as he runs between hiding behind this innocent and that one in the most thoroughly negotiated and counseled course of action in the history of man, yet, when our adversary deliberately and maliciously invades a sovereign country in a naked power grab without a thought for diplomacy, causing untold thousands of civilians to get killed, then sticks around to rob, rape, and loot the citizens, these same TRAITORS stand mute. They are people who bemoan the splinter in our eye, yet ignore the plank in our adversaries.
What perhaps is most unsettling to Domestic-6 and myself is not so much that there is a foreign power trying to assert itself and increase its sphere of influence to our detriment, but that while Russia is rapaciously assuming power, we here in the United States, as a whole are farting around with pedestrian, and ultimately inconsequential issues. Russia is doing everything in it's power to leave us exposed to our enemies. Why do you think that they have not helped us reign in Iran? Why do you think that they have not been more forceful towards North Korea? Russia, under Putin's rule, is doing it's best to hamstring us, and what are we doing here? worrying about wind farms, and becoming eco-friendly. So, here we sit watching Russia slowly dissolve our strategic assets, and we do nothing. I originally thought that we should use some stealth assets to punch the Russian invaders in the nose. In retrospect what we should have done is to smash Iran's military so completely that it makes Russia's adventure look like a game of patty-cake. Send them a message; "You pound one of our allies, and we will totally eviscerate one of yours." When they pointed nukes at Poland for us signing an agreement to place interceptors there, we should have immediately stated our intention to double the number of our interceptors.
Furthermore, since Russia depends upon oil as it's largest source of income, we should do everything in our power to drive down the price of gas. That means drill. Open up ANWR. Open up offshore. Open up everything. Build more refineries. Start building nuclear plants.
Kick them in their economic nuts!
But almost nobody here gets it. Neil Cavuto is the only person I have seen on TV who seems to even have an idea of the scale of the problem. Everyone else seems to be more interested in John Edwards' love child. This kind of Ostrich Orientation (you know, where your head is in the sand) guarantees that things will get worse before they get better. I can only imagine how badly they are going to go with the Obamanation ini office. Putin already has him pinpointed as a fool and a weakling who will offer no resistance to Putins further plans. In fact, the Obamessiah will probably help him by cutting our own throat.
So here we sit, watching things unfold with no significant reactionfrom our political leadership (I know; an oxymoron). Grim and some others from the Milblogs and Blackfive seem to get it, but that is just not much of a voice in th great cacaphony of the internet blogs. Otherwise, there is not much said or done. Most are oblivious to what is going on, and here we sit... powerless to do anything. Domestic-6 and I feel kind of like we are on a massive ship about to collide with an iceberg that only a few of us on board can see, and that our cries of alarm are not loud enough to rise above the din of dinner conversation inside.
Well, we shall scream away none the less. We holler and yell, while we get our life vests on, and prepare a boat to deploy.
Things will get worse.
